Project Overview
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) has studied and is in the final stages of designing the reconstruction of the Raton/Clayton Interchange along I-25 at US64/87 (CN: 4101691). The interchange provides critical access to the City of Raton and the City of Clayton.
The purpose and need of this project is focused on improving safety, addressing physical deficiencies, and mitigating travel demand and congestion within the Raton/Clayton Interchange and associated intersections.
Project Aesthetics
The project design is well underway and nearing completion. As part of this effort, the NMDOT included this project in the Bridge Art Program that enriches New Mexico’s transportation infrastructure with innovative and diverse public art. A committee comprised of City of Raton and NMDOT officials and personnel and supported by the project design team completed selection of an artist team to provide the project’s infrastructure with an artwork design capturing the region’s cultural heritage. The artist team recently completed their design. Below, you will find realistic modeling and renderings reflecting the approved designs themed around the Gateway to New Mexico, the area’s wildlife, and the evolution of transportation in the area from covered wagon on the SF Trail to the railroad system that fueled local settlement.

Project Study Results
In Spring of 2023, the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) completed a Phase I-A/B Study for the Raton/Clayton Interchange along I-25 at US64/87 (CN: 410169). The Purpose and Need focused on improving safety, addressing physical deficiencies, and mitigating travel demand and congestion within the Raton/Clayton Interchange and associated intersections. The Phase I-A/B Study evaluated alternatives and provided recommendations on how to best improve the interchange. During the study process, the NMDOT engaged local stakeholders and sought public input toward final recommendations of the project improvements.
The study area included the US 64/87 (Raton/Clayton) Interchange on I-25 from MP 450.84 to MP 452.35. The Interchange serves as one of three access points to the City of Raton, and it also connects to the US 64/87 highway corridor that continues east to Clayton, NM. This highway provides access to communities in northwest New Mexico as well as regional connectivity for the nation's transportation system. The interchange sees significant traffic as a gateway between New Mexico and Colorado just south of the Raton Pass.
